Welcome to Calderitas and Beyond

Thank you for visiting Calderitas and Beyond!

I invite those interested in visiting Mexico to consider taking the road less traveled. If the Resort areas or Border towns have left you wanting to see more of “real” Mexico, or if you are not interested in the drama of the “Party Scenes” of those areas, Southern Mexico is your escape. Take the price you pay for one week in a resort and spend much more time exploring the sites of Southern Mexico.

Swim In The Bay

Swim the tranquil waters of the Bay of Chetumal where nearly the entire shoreline in Calderitas is open to public swimming. Chetumal has beaches and parks with free public access.

Fishing Charters

For the fisherman, you can hire a charter boat and set your hook in the bay and beyond to get your angler fix.

Hike the Bahia

If hiking is your thing you can hike from the Mirador De Calderitas to the Malecón de Chetumal. It is six miles of bay views and critter watching. There are several points of interest along the way, and the State of Quintana Roo has been working hard to renovate the walkway, adding sculptures, and update the parks. I would highly recommend this hike to those who can make the trek. Don’t worry if you cannot make the hike back to Calderitas, as it is a short walk to Centro where you can grab a taxi or take the Combi back. See the Combi Guide in the In Town Tab. Don’t worry if you are unable to make the hike. You can see the views in the Bahia Hike tab in the Photo Gallery without all the sweating.

Archeological Sites

For those who are interested in the ancient cities of the Mayans, there are several nearby. take a day trip to Oxtankah, Chacchoben, Ichkabal, ElResbalón, and Dzibanche. Or take a explore the surrounding areas to see even more!

Day Trips

Other great day trips are a visit to the lagoon of seven colors and cenotes of Bacalar, the reefs of Mahahual, or any of the smaller villages in between. There are several other cenotes within range also.

Aquí Inicia México-Here Starts Mexico

Rich in Mexican history and culture, you will not see a lot of Spanish influences here. Instead, you will be immersed in “real” Mexico- Aqui Inicia Mexico. Experience the hospitality of the friendly locals with their food offerings, (some of which are unique to this area) drinks, and souvenirs. The hospitality of the people and the unspoiled beauty of nature of the bay and jungles will not disappoint. The land of the first Mexican child awaits. See why the locals call it “muy tranquilo.”

Explore and bookmark this site, which is constantly updated, and see how much more there is to this part of Mexico than a casual glance would indicate. See more of the land that has adopted me as one of their own.
